Mission

Strawtown’s mission is to create and provide learning experiences that connect young people with the natural world through art and science discovery.  As a team of artists, naturalists, and educators, we also seek to model and inspire environmental stewardship.

Creativity

Everyone is an artist at Strawtown.  Art is found in how we see the world and respond with wonder and imagination.  We work with elements of staging and surprise to keep the creative channels open.

Nature Connection

In just one generation, kids (and our whole society) have migrated indoors and are missing out on formative playtime with nature.  Our staff is dedicated to reconnecting children with the wonders of nature, and drawing out the calm, centered, outdoors-savvy child in each of them.

A Learning Community

Each student is seen and appreciated for who they are within our community that values kindness and respect.  One of our mottos is Safety, Fun, Education.  We encourage personal growth and a sense of belonging.  Friendship is at the heart of all we do — friendships with each other, and with our surroundings: the plants, animals, and streams.

Shared Commitment

Together we learn to live in mindful relationship with the earth. Our staff are active environmental stewards and advocates, and help young people learn that they can make a difference for the future.

About Our Logo

Our logo symbol represents many elements that are significant to Strawtown’s way of teaching and being in the world. Our logo represents:

  • community, gathering, sharing space
  • the circle of life, earth, seasons, time
  • the four directions, navigation, perspective
  • balance, relationships
  • nature, art, beauty
